Department Overview

The Department of General Medicine offers broad-spectrum Diagnostic and Therapeutic services through OPD, IPD, and 24x7 emergency care. It functions as the Nodal Department for many super-specialty services including Neurology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, and Nephrology.

The department is staffed by a qualified team of professors, associate professors, senior residents, junior residents, and nursing personnel who deliver competent, compassionate care while engaging in academic mentorship and research.

Functional Super-Specialties
  • Neurology: Stroke care, epilepsy management, and neuro-rehabilitation services.
  • Cardiology: Outpatient and inpatient services, with a fully functional Cath Lab.
  • Gastroenterology: Endoscopy, colonoscopy, and liver disease clinics.
  • Nephrology: Management of acute and chronic kidney disease.
  • Dialysis Unit: State-of-the-art haemodialysis services for inpatients and outpatients, supervised by nephrologists and dialysis technicians.
  • Intensive Care Units: Medical ICU (MICU), Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU), and Respiratory ICU (RICU) with a total capacity of 36 ICU beds.
Interdepartmental Coordination

The department maintains excellent collaborative relations with all clinical and preclinical departments. It works closely with Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, and Surgery for timely diagnosis, referrals, joint case management, and academic integration. General Medicine is also integral to institutional disaster preparedness and outbreak response teams.

Academic and Clinical Training

Undergraduate (MBBS) Training:

  • CBME-aligned curriculum with modular integration, logbook assessments, and AETCOM competencies.
  • Bedside clinics, ward rounds, outpatient exposure, and emergency department rotations.
  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), small group discussions, and formative assessments.
  • Daily assessments with MCQs through Google Forms.

Postgraduate (MD General Medicine) Training:

  • Core rotations through all medicine subspecialties including Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, and Cardiology.
  • Thesis work, grand rounds, case-based seminars, and interdepartmental audits.
  • Research methodology workshops and participation in CMEs, conferences, and publication activities.
  • ICU Posting to all Postgraduates.
  • Regular duty posting.

Skill Labs and Simulation Training

In alignment with NMC norms, the department utilizes skill labs to train students in clinical examination techniques, CPR, venepuncture, IV cannulation, lumbar puncture, ascitic and pleural tap simulations. Scenario-based training for medical emergencies and OSCE skill stations are conducted regularly to ensure competency acquisition.
